Why naive slow-down changes pitch

If you simply play back audio samples more slowly, you stretch every waveform cycle, which lowers frequency — the same thing that happens when a record player runs slow. Pitch and speed are locked together.

Time-stretching algorithms break that link. They chop the audio into short overlapping grains and re-lay them at a new spacing, matching waveform phase at the joins so the result stays smooth. The number of cycles per second is preserved, so the pitch stays put.

How far can you stretch before it sounds odd?

Between roughly 75% and 130% of the original tempo, quality artefacts are usually inaudible on a full mix. Beyond that you may hear a faint flutter on sustained tones and reverb tails, which is normal for any time-stretch algorithm. For extreme slow-downs, stretch in two smaller stages rather than one large one.
